The New Republic, 28 August 1989, Andrew Sullivan, "Here Comes the Groom: A (conservative) case for gay marriage" is considered by many to be a seminal moment in gay history when a faction, albeit a small faction, in the conservative movement embraced the concept of marriage equality. The legal argument that won the day was the unconstitutionality of discriminating against parties to a contract based on the sex of the parties involved. Marriage law is a subset of Contract law in the US and that argument first floated in the 1960s & 1970s ultimately succeeded.
